A peek into the past
The Castle of Letters once had multi-story homes and looked like a fortified village. Historical texts from 1030 and 1033 tell us about this early settlement, showing its importance as both a defensive and residential place.
The castle’s trapezoidal shape and its four remaining towers, with the tallest serving as the keep, hint at its medieval roots.
In 987, they built a cathedral inside the castle walls, making it the seat of the bishop. In the 12th century, a beautiful bell tower was added to the castle’s grandeur.
This bell tower is decorated with inlays of gray tuff and yellow sandstone, forming stars, crosses, and lozenges.
The Castle of Letters is more than just old walls; it’s a glimpse into the past with stories waiting to be uncovered.
