What is the difference between Pompeii Express and Pompeii Plus?
Pompeii Express (official €18, GYG from €34 with audio guide): entry to the main ancient city — all 66 hectares, all 9 districts, the Forum, houses, baths, Lupanar, Amphitheatre, Plaster Casts. Does not include suburban villas. Pompeii Plus (official €25, GYG from €39): everything in Express plus Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes, and Villa Regina at Boscoreale with its Antiquarium — connected by the free Pompeii Artebus shuttle. Strict last entry times apply for Plus.
The decision between Express and Plus comes down to two factors: how much time you have and whether you specifically want the Villa of the Mysteries. Get it right and you have the perfect Pompeii day. What does Pompeii Express include? Pompeii Express covers the entire main archaeological city of Pompeii — all 66 hectares across 9 districts. This includes the Forum, Temple of Jupiter, Temple of Apollo, Basilica, House of the Faun (Alexander Mosaic replica), House of the Vettii (finest frescoes, reopened 2023), House of the Tragic Poet (Cave Canem mosaic), Stabian Baths, Lupanar, Via dell’Abbondanza, Thermopolium of Regio V, Plaster Casts, Garden of the Fugitives, Large Theatre, Odeion, and the Amphitheatre. It does NOT include the suburban villas.
Express is right for you if:

What does Pompeii Plus include that Express doesn’t? Pompeii Plus adds three suburban villas accessible via the free Pompeii Artebus shuttle from Piazza Esedra: (1) Villa of the Mysteries — the most extraordinary cycle of ancient wall paintings in existence, 29 near-life-size figures on a blood-red background depicting a Dionysiac initiation rite; (2) Villa of Diomedes — a large aristocratic villa; (3) Villa Regina at Boscoreale with Antiquarium — a working wine-producing estate with original equipment and find displays.
The Villa of the Mysteries is the primary reason to upgrade to Plus. If you have a genuine interest in Roman art or ancient history — or if you have already visited the main city and want to extend — the Plus ticket is excellent value. If your schedule is uncertain or tight, do not risk the Plus cutoff (see below).
Last Entry Times for Pompeii Plus — Critical
This is the most important practical detail for Plus ticket holders:
- April 1 – October 31: Last entry 5:30 pm
- November 1 – March 31: Last entry 3:30 pm
The suburban villas require taking the Pompeii Artebus shuttle from Piazza Esedra — this adds travel time on top of your site visit. If you are coming from Rome by train, combining with Vesuvius, or arriving on a delayed coastal bus from Amalfi — any of these can push your Pompeii arrival past the Plus cutoff. In those cases, book Express and lose nothing from the main city experience.
Audio guide for Plus: Collect the guide device at the official desk at Via Villa dei Misteri n.2, Porta Marina Superiore. The device must be returned to the same desk before you exit — if you are planning to exit via Piazza Anfiteatro, the GYG digital guide (no device to return) is the more practical choice.

Three Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Buying Plus but arriving after the last entry cutoff
The most expensive mistake — you pay the Plus premium but cannot use it. If you are coming from Rome, combining with Vesuvius, or arriving from the Amalfi Coast, book Express as your safety default.
2. Thinking you need Plus for a great visit
You do not. The main archaeological city of Pompeii is one of the most extraordinary sites in the ancient world. The Express ticket covers everything that most visitors will remember for a lifetime. Plus is an upgrade for specific interests, not a prerequisite.
3. Not booking either in advance
Pompeii has a 20,000-visitor daily cap. In peak season, both time slots fill up. Walking up to the gate in July at 11:00 am with no ticket is a real risk. Book in advance.

Can I upgrade from Express to Plus at the site?
The Porta Marina ticket desk sometimes allows upgrades on the day. Availability is not guaranteed in peak season — book Plus from the start if you want it.
Does Express or Plus include a guided tour?
Neither includes a guided tour by default. The Guided Tour with Archaeologist is a separate booking that includes both entry and a 2-hour expert tour.
Which ticket is best for a first-time visitor with 4 hours?
Express is sufficient and correct for a 4-hour visit. The main city takes 3–4 hours to cover properly. Upgrading to Plus would leave you rushed at the Villa of the Mysteries rather than absorbing it properly. If you want the Villa, book the 3-hour small group tour that includes it as part of a structured expert visit.
