Best time to visit Pompeii

Tourists visiting the ancient city of Pompeii archaeological site.

The best time to explore Pompeii is before 10 am. The weather is pleasant, and the site is less crowded during these early hours, allowing for a more peaceful experience.

By 10.30 am, large tour groups begin to arrive, filling up the ticket booths, entrance lines, and popular sights within the ruins.

These crowds can significantly impact your visit, making it harder to fully appreciate the site’s historical significance.

The crowds start to thin out after lunch. Arriving around 3 pm is another excellent option for visiting Pompeii.

The site remains open until 7 pm during peak season, giving you ample time to explore with fewer people. The ruins close at 5 pm in the off-peak months, so plan accordingly.

Even if you arrive at 3 pm, you will have four hours to enjoy and explore the ruins thoroughly, taking in the remarkable history and preserved artifacts without the midday rush.

Learn about the facilities available onsite, familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations for visitors, and enjoy convenient dining and refreshment spots within Pompeii.

Tips for visiting Pompeii

To make the most of your trip to Pompeii, consider the following tips:

  • Buy your tickets in advance to skip the long lines and ensure easy entry
  • Plan to arrive either early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the busiest times
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses if you’re visiting during the summer months
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, as Pompeii’s ancient cobblestone streets are uneven
  • Select a few sites that you most want to see and map out your route
  • Consider booking a guided tour to gain deeper insight into the history and significance of Pompeii ruins
  • Carry water and snacks to stay refreshed as the site is large and walking is extensive
  • Check the weather forecast for heavy rain or extreme heat conditions
  • If time allows, explore some nearby sites like Herculaneum, Oplontis, or the Stabiae Villas, to obtain unique perspectives on ancient Roman life
